GENERAL INFORMATION

A short explanation of the concepts of qi and meridian

Qi and meridian are central concepts in traditional Eastern medicine. There is no good Western translation of qi, but it has been described as “life-energy, dynamics, primordial power”..

Meridians are energy channels through which qi flows. They form a network in the body, right below the skin and muscles. There are twelve standard meridians – six Yin and six Yang meridians – and every one of them is connected to a corresponding organ.

Treatment methods

The treatment methods that I use all have Asian roots. Apart from Ayurvedic massage and reflexology, they are part of traditional Eastern medicine. This type of medicine treats the human being as a whole with the aim of restoring the balance between body, soul and mind.

These treatment methods have a generally similar positive effect: clearing the mind, restoring bodily balance, loosening up the muscles and skin, generating energy, improving the circulation of blood and lymph, supporting the digestive system, reinforcing the nervous system and stimulating the endocrine system.

I also provide lifestyle advice, especially concerning nutrition and exercise.

Intake and treatment

During the first meeting I talk with the client about their personal situation and I make a diagnosis of the wrist and tongue, which gives me an image of their current constitution. On the basis of the first meeting I recommend the most effective treatment method. This recommendation is based on my extensive experience with methods from traditional Eastern medicine. A treatment method may consist of shiatsu, acupuncture, tui na, moxa, cupping therapy, Ayurvedic massage, reflexology, or a combination of any of these.

Then I will immediately carry out the first treatment, in as far as that is possible and desired at that moment. The treatment sessions only take place by appointment. This is necessary to create an atmosphere in the studio that responds optimally to the needs of the client.

“For some, a warm, peaceful environment is all it takes to relax. Others want to listen to music they brought with them during the massage. Still others benefit from a calm discussion about their personal situation before the massage, or use the silence to just be silent for once.”

I compose a personal treatment plan for every client. This plan is adjusted to the needs and problems of that person. The main aim of the treatment sessions is that the client activates his or her own healing ability.

“Usually as soon as people call me they begin their own healing. The first step is the most important one. I give people exercises and advice on their lifestyle and nutrition. I don’t want people to come back to me all the time. I give them the first push: their own healing ability should do the rest.”

When in doubt, it is wise to contact your GP. In case of pregnancy, I will adjust the treatment.

How to prepare for treatment?

It is better to not have a heavy meal or use alcohol or drugs right before a treatment session. It is also advised to avoid heavy mental or physical exertion. The same applies for busyness and stress. After the session, drink plenty of water. Wear loose clothes or bring loose clothes with you. It is best to wear old clothes, because clothes can become greasy from the massage oil.

Treatment of children

Children can also profit much from traditional Eastern medicine treatments. Treatment for children may work well, for example, for the following issues:

    1. having trouble calming down
    2. having too much energy (ADHD), or too little energy
    3. problems related to learning and concentration
    4. headaches
    5. emotional problems, such as fear of failure or fear of exams
    6. respiratory problems
    7. digestive problems
    8. allergy problems

Children have a naturally strong connection to their body and to the present, so their self-healing ability is often easy to activate. Naturally, the treatment plan for children is always discussed with the parents. Massage for children is done on top of their clothing, and children usually experience it as pleasant and relaxing.
